Once you get settled in at a law firm, it’s easy to believe that the best career decision is to stick around for the long haul. After all, you’ve built a foundation, and change can be risky. But what should you do if you start feeling like it might not be a good fit— especially if you can’t pinpoint exactly where the misalignment lies?

Sometimes, the signs are subtle, like small but growing frustrations or a nagging feeling that something isn’t right. Other times, there are big glaring red flags, but maybe you can explain them away. If any of the following sounds familiar, you might need to ask yourself if you are at the wrong law firm.

1. You dread Mondays—or spend every weekend working

Do you feel a knot in your stomach every Sunday night, dreading the sound of your alarm on Monday morning? Maybe you spent the weekend playing catch up or lost precious hours working late into Friday evening, despite your best efforts during the week to work ahead. Or perhaps it’s a growing sense that you just don’t connect with your colleagues or work environment.

Whether the feeling is caused by burnout, lack of resources and support, or a simple mismatch between your goals and the firm’s, it signals a potential firm culture fit issue, and it deserves attention.

If Sunday night dread or weekends at the computer have become your norm, it’s time to take a step back and reconsider where you’re investing your time and energy.

2. You feel like no one at your firm respects your ideas

Do you often feel like your suggestions are ignored in partner meetings or met with eye rolls and abrupt interruptions?

The situation can be not just frustrating but demoralizing. And if it’s gotten so bad that you’ve stopped speaking up altogether because you know your ideas won’t be taken seriously, you might need to rethink your surroundings.

While sometimes the way in which requests are pitched lack the business case validation needed to get a “yes”, if you have a proven track record and your ideas are sound, they should be considered.

If not, it might be time to find a firm that can help you fulfill your vision.

3. You have to do a lot of apologizing for things that aren’t your fault

Is your firm missing important practice areas that your clients are looking for support in? Are the rates you charge feeling misaligned with client expectations? Are you constantly missing family events you promised you would be at?

If you find that you’re constantly apologizing because you don’t have the right resources to get work done as quickly as you’d like, you are likely shouldering too much responsibility for issues that are beyond your control at your firm.

When the time you spend saying “I’m sorry” outweighs the time you spend doing the work, it’s time to step back and address the underlying issues. There could be a fundamental misalignment.

4. You feel like no one respects your practice area or clients

Do your partners constantly downplay the value of your practice area or act like your clients are too small to matter? When your firm treats the focus of your work or your clients’ needs as beneath them or not worth pursuing, don’t let it get you down or keep you small.

Instead, consider it a sign that your current partnership is no longer the right fit. Refocus your efforts on finding a team that supports and values all you bring to the table.

5. Your firm’s succession plan is unclear or you don’t agree with it

Is your firm relying too much on aging rainmakers who hold tight to their clients because they believe they’re going to live forever instead of having a solid succession plan in place? Or perhaps they’ve laid out a succession plan, but you aren’t confident in their decisions.

Maybe you’re concerned that the next managing partner will be someone you can’t stand or, worse, someone you don’t believe is up for the job.

If you’re finding that your vision doesn’t align with your firm leadership’s direction, it may be best to actively seek out a firm with leaders you can trust and a plan for the future you can get behind.

6. You’re not sure if your firm plans to keep your practice area

Have you noticed that your practice area is receiving fewer resources while other departments are getting all the attention? No one’s outright told you that your group is on the chopping block, but when you ask management, the answers are vague or evasive.

If it feels like the writing’s on the wall, it’s time to pay attention. Ask yourself if it’s worth sticking around at a firm that isn’t fully invested in your contributions—or if you’re better off finding a place that prioritizes your practice area.

7. You’re having a lot of trouble hiring talent and it’s not a tight  market

Have you been waiting months for qualified resumes after asking the recruiting director to fill an associate position or find a lateral partner? Meanwhile, your partner friends at other firms seem to have no problem finding quality candidates.

If your firm can’t attract the right talent despite a healthy job market, bigger issues might be at play. Below-market salaries, limited development opportunities, or an uninviting work environment not only limits your ability to build a strong team, it can also lead to burnout and stall your career growth. Consider if staying at your firm is positioning you for long-term success.

8. You don’t feel your pay is fair

Are you bringing in a lot of business and putting in long hours but not seeing that reflected in your compensation? While it’s not all about the money, it definitely is a big factor in career satisfaction.

If your firm’s unpredictable compensation calculations never seem to match your efforts, the reality is you might be at the wrong law firm. Spend some time exploring compensation structures at other firms and consider making a move to one that’s better aligned with your expectations.

Remember, your career is yours to shape, and just like a bus ride, you can always choose to hop off if the destination doesn’t match your plans.

As a rainmaker, you don’t have to sit through a drought at a firm that’s not working for you anymore. Sometimes, you just need to shake things up and conjure your own storm.
